Final Curtain Call

Sandra Gail, a charismatic dreamer.

Taught to work hard by her caring father, she believed she could have anything she wanted.

Charles Black, her knight in shining armor. He was everything she ever wanted, the answer to her most important dream.

Or so she thought.

The dream was to be an adored wife, loving mother, and exceptional nurse. A dream that would be quickly haunted by a reality she could have never imagined. She would soon find herself caught in a webbed triangle of three main characters that would change the course of her life forever.

Slowly taken captive with no escape in sight, Sandra struggled through the darkest days of her life. Battered and beaten down, emotionally and physically; wounded from torture, deceit, and betrayal, she still prayed for a way out.

Before long, she found she had two reasons for living: Alex and little Noah. Now she had a reason to fight, even if the cost was her life, determined to have peace at the Final Curtain Call.

5*- Riveting and Eye Opening

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (11/2024)

Rita McAlister’s novel “Final Curtain Call” tells a poignant and gripping story that delves into the life of a young woman named Sandra Gail, who gets caught up in a toxic and abusive relationship. The story begins when Sandra develops an innocent crush on Charles Black, who works at the same place as her. She is ecstatic when he asks her out. It doesn’t take too long to see that something isn’t right, and he starts to reveal himself as a manipulative sociopath. “Final Curtain Call” tells the story of her descent into hell with him, and how she finally manages to escape. McAlister demonstrates a talent for creating characters that resonate as real people. She brings Sandra to life in an authentic way that allows readers to find her relatable and see her struggles as heartbreaking. As Charles’ abuse escalates, we can feel her excitement turn into despair. Many readers will relate to her desire to save this man through love, but they will also know that she will not be successful. It is not uncommon for victims to think that they can change their abusers. His domineering mother also adds a layer of complexity to the story, because it shows that there is a cycle of abuse being played out. Sandra also realizes that Charles is more abusive after he is around his mother. She sees he is taking his anger at his mother out on her. The intensity peaks after Sandra’s near-fatal sexual assault. This moment forces her to confront the reality of her situation. Despite her commitment to marry Charles, his physical and sexual abuse becomes increasingly unbearable. Her willingness to continue with the wedding demonstrates the psychological toll of domestic violence and societal pressures that keep victims from speaking up. In addition to being a compelling story, “Final Curtain Call,” is a critical resource for awareness. McAlister provides insights into the dynamics of abusive relationships and offers important lessons for readers, especially those who find themselves in similar situations or want to provide support for loved ones who are victims of these circumstances. This story feels more like an autobiography than a novel. Readers are given the impression that the author is drawing from her real-life experiences as she sheds light on these darker themes. In conclusion, “Final Curtain Call” is a powerful narrative that will encourage readers to recognize the early signs of abuse and the importance of reaching out for help. This story advocates for resilience and recovery from abuse. Rita McAlister’s poignant storytelling will give hope to those who are feeling trapped and show them that escape is possible.

5*- Chilling

This book is an eye opener of what someone in an abusive relationship goes through continuously. The sad thing is family and friends sometimes never know what is going on behind closed doors. This book is upsetting to read but needs to be read and shared with others. Years of abuse took their toll on Sandra and her boys but God’s love can bring you through the ashes. It is a book that you will think about every time you hear of domestic abuse.

5*- Captivating

This book had me interested in the first three pages. I received it yesterday and read it in about 4 hours. Sandra did what she had to do to survive and protect her children. I believe this book could help others in an abusive relationship if they take it to heart. Sandra endured what no human should ever endure in their life. I cried and was anxious the entire time I was reading it. The author did amazing writing this book and I highly recommend it.

5*- Raw, Honest

Sandra was naive to the evil she would encounter when she fell in love and married her abuser. This is a raw and honest account of how she endured and survived with her faith in God stronger than ever.
